Lymphoedema Treatment
How can our physiotherapists help?
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling, usually in the arms or legs, caused by a retention of lymph fluid due to an impaired lymphatic system. It is common among people who experienced breast or pelvic cancer treatments. It can also be resulted from radiation therapy, infections or other causes that affect lymph drainage.
We offer Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), a gold-standard, evidence-based approach to managing lymphoedema effectively and improving quality of life.
Symptoms, Treatments and Approach
What is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)?
CDT is a comprehensive physiotherapy treatment for managing lymphoedema by reducing swelling, improving lymphatic flow and preventing complications. It consists of two phases:
Phase 1: Intensive Phase
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): A gentle, specialized massage technique to stimulate lymphatic flow and reduce fluid retention.
Compression Therapy: Use of bandages on limbs with specialized techniques to prevent fluid from reaccumulating after drainage.
Exercise: Tailored mobilization exercises to support lymphatic circulation and improve limb function.
Skin Care: Education on how to maintain healthy skin, reduce infection risk and promote healing.
Phase 2: Maintenance Phase
Once swelling is under control, the focus shifts to maintaining results through ongoing self-care, wearing compression garments and regular follow-up therapy sessions if needed.
