Heel Pain (Plantar Fasciitis)

How can our physiotherapists help?

Plantar fasciitis (fash-ee-eye-tis) is a painful condition when the thick fibrous band of tissue under the foot (plantar fascia) becomes inflamed or irritated. It is the most common cause of heel pain.

Plantar fasciitis is an extremely common heel condition. An estimated 1 in 10 people will develop heel pain at some point in their life, particularly between the ages of 40 to 60.

Symptoms, Treatments and Approach

Common Symptoms

Heel pain with the first steps when waking up, or after sitting for a while

  • Pain is usually worse when walking barefoot on hard surfaces

  • Wearing shoes that don’t support your feet

Common Causes

Plantar fasciitis is often caused by overuse or increased levels of physical activities such as running, dancing and sports.

Other health conditions can increase the risk of developing plantar fasciitis, including age and obesity.

Physiotherapy Assessment and Diagnosis

In conjunction with medical history taking, our physios will perform a series of diagnostic tests to determine the exact cause of your condition and the factors contributing to your injury. These tests will also help determine the exact location of your injury and the best course of treatment.

Physiotherapy Treatments and Advice

Once our physiotherapists have diagnosed you condition accurately, they will customise a treatment plan to help you recover faster and return to pain-free mobility.

We use a range of physiotherapy methods to treat plantar fasciitis and heel pain conditions, including:

  • Manual therapy for soft tissue and joint mobilisation to release tension in foot and calf muscle

  • Shockwave Therapy to speed up tissue healing

  • Acupuncture or dry needling

  • Remedial exercises and stretches

  • Strengthening exercises to prevent re-injury

  • Lifestyle and activity adjustments to avoid aggravating the injury

  • Advice on proper footwear (if applicable)

Need Help?

If you have been experiencing heel pain, or plantar fasciitis, make sure to consult your physiotherapist. There is no quick treatment solution with plantar fasciitis, with more severe cases requiring more than a few months to become completely pain-free. If left untreated, the symptoms and discomfort can last a long time and get worse.

Our physiotherapists are highly experienced in managing and treating the symptoms of heel pain / plantar fasciitis as well as other musculoskeletal conditions.
